Now and Always

Love. It’s what the world needsnow and it’s what the world has, and always will, need.

I’m celebrating a birthday this week, my 45th to be exact, which means I arrived into the world in 1965. That very same year, the brilliant and talented team of Hal David and Burt Bacharach gave birth to “What the World Needs Now Is Love.”

For some reason, it feels apropos to reflect on this song at this particular point in time. Shared birth year aside, I’m amazed by how relevant this song still feels today, all these years later.

If Jackie DeShannon was singing about the need for “love, sweet love” in 1965, why is there still “just too little of it” in 2010?

What are we so darn afraid of that we keep choosing fear over love, fear that shows up in the form of anger and hatred, divisiveness and ridicule, arrogance and superiority? And why does the chasm feel wider than ever?

Check your love meter, the one that registers your output with family and friends. Check it with your neighbors and colleagues and your local community too.

Perhaps most important, check your output among those with whom you would otherwise beg to differ in matters of politics and religion, those of a different race and gender, of a different age and income, of a differing social stature and sexual orientation. The list goes on and on, particularly in those areas of your life that don’t seem to be working, where life no longer feels magical to you.

After all, we were born into a magical world, weren’t we? Over time, we got “covered-up” with things (like abuse and prejudice), things that made us run and hide from love. It’s time to stop running away from it and to start spreading it. The world is waiting for you. (And aren’t you waiting for you, too?)

Give yourself the gift of three minutes and 12 seconds to listen to that  popular 1965 song (like, really listen) and if you agree that the world does indeed need “love, sweet love” right now, ask yourself exactly when, where, and how you’ll  start spreading it -- deliberately and unconditionally.

What the world needs now is love sweet love
It’s the only thing that there’s just too little of
What the world needs now is love sweet love
No not just for some but for everyone

Lord we don’t need another mountain
There are mountains and hillsides enough to climb
There are oceans and rivers enough to cross
Enough to last until the end of time

What the world needs now is love sweet love
It’s the only thing that there’s just too little of
what the world needs now is love sweet love
No not just for some but for everyone

Lord, we don’t need another meadow
There are corn fields and wheat fields enough to grow
There are sunbeams and moonbeams enough to shine
Oh listen Lord, if you want to know

What the world needs now is love sweet love
It’s the only thing that there’s just too little of
What the world needs now is love sweet love
No not just for some, oh but just for every, every everyone.

What the world (whoa whoa) needs now
Is love (is love) sweet love
What the world (oh oh) needs now
Is love (is love) sweet love
What the world (whoa whoa) needs now
Is love (is love) sweet love
